Toronto’s Western road trip ended with a whimper.

After a solid start, the wheels came off. The Sharks put four past Jonathan Bernier in the second period, and added three more in the third, with little fight left in the Leafs down the stretch.

Toronto’s possession numbers weren’t bad in this game, and only really started to fall off midway through the third period, as the lead grew out of reach. Toronto actually finished with more overall chances than the Sharks, although that was down to some effective powerplays, as they were clearly outchanced at even strength.

After a solid early start, Toronto’s 5-on-5 game began to suffer — in the second half of the game, they were out-chanced 13-2, with those two chances only coming once the Sharks had put seven goals past Bernier. The shorthanded goal from Nieto was followed up by a series of Leafs chances, but after that powerplay things took a turn for the worse.

The two lines that had a tough time in Los Angeles again struggled, but this time things went worse for Nazem Kadri’s unit. They were the worst of the Leafs lines, generating little and not managing to provide much defensive resistance, either. Brad Boyes and Shawn Matthias were also poor again, finishing in the negative, as was Byron Froese, who drew in to take Mark Arcobello’s spot in the lineup.

James van Riemsdyk was the Leafs best player, putting up a +3 in chances, and it will be a substantial blow for him to miss some time after a foot injury. Tyler Bozak and P.A. Parenteau, who have been strong recently, will have to keep up their good form with a different linemate. Peter Holland and Daniel Winnik had another good game on the heels of their impressive showing against the Kings, finishing in the positive again.

The defensive pairings ended up completely shuffled around, but almost all of them ended up finishing in the negative. The lone exception was Matt Hunwick, who was mostly separated from Morgan Rielly, splitting time with Roman Polak and Frank Corrado. For his part, Corrado was mildly outchanced in his minutes, and struggled to win the neutral zone, including almost no controlled entries into the Sharks’ zone. The young defenders had a tough game was well, with Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner finishing the worst on the backend in terms of chances.
