In the game that officially marks the halfway point of the season, the Maple Leafs played well but couldn’t get a win.

Falling behind after Columbus scored late in each of the first two periods, Toronto got one back through Brad Boyes, but that was as close as they could get.

The Leafs had a complete stranglehold on this game, with a clear advantage in shots and possession, limiting the Blue Jackets to just a handful of chances. Columbus were even in chances while the game was close, but Toronto was able to put on a lot of pressure while chasing the game, although it was ultimately to no avail. The Leafs also dominated the controlled entries, as Columbus failed to venture forward much in the last two periods.

Toronto had the vast majority of the chances in the last 35 minutes of the game, allowing Columbus only three from that point on. However, one of those was Wennberg’s goal, which gave the Jackets a two goal lead. Columbus also managed only a single chance in the third period, outchanced 8-1 by the Leafs.

Josh Leivo, who drew in for the injured James van Riemsdyk, had a good start to his NHL season, the lone Leaf forward not on for a single Jackets chance in his eight minutes. He had his best success with Peter Holland and Joffrey Lupul. Shawn Matthias moved up to take van Riemsdyk’s spot on the Bozak line, and they also played well — all three finished in the positive in chances. The Kadri line was only able to break even, and generated fewer than either of the other top three lines, matching up against the Dubinsky line.

Dion Phaneuf and Jake Gardiner were very strong offensively, with Phaneuf having one of his best games of the season, finishing a team best +6. Matt Hunwick, who played 20 minutes, somehow managed to finish below even in chances despite getting over 90% offensive zone starts.
