Toronto had a strong start in their last game against the Bruins this season, taking the lead but falling behind seven minutes into the second period.

They couldn’t manage to pull any goals back before an empty netter sealed the game for Boston.

The game was even in chances and in the neutral zone. Toronto’s early advantage was negated in the second period, and the two sides finished essentially level.

The Leafs dominated the first period, allowing Boston only two chances, but found themselves facing the opposite result in the second. Both teams exchanged chances in the third, with Toronto able to generate a few in the last five minutes, although none paid off.

Tyler Bozak, with Connor Brown and Brad Boyes, totally avoided Patrice Bergeron, and were able to take a solid advantage against of their matchups. They were on for just a single chance against, and finished top the table in chance differential. They did have the advantage of getting more offensive zone starts than any of the other lines. Bergeron ended up going almost exclusively against Nazem Kadri’s line, and the Leafs got the worst of that matchup, with Kadri and Grabner a team-low -5.  The fourth line had an effective night, as Brooks Laich, Ben Smith and Colin Greening joined the Bozak line in finishing positive.

Like the Kadri line, Morgan Rielly and Martin Marincin had a tough night, finishing well in the negative against the Bergeron trio. It was a much better game for Rinat Valiev and Frank Corrado, who were effective against the Eriksson line. Connor Carrick, playing with Jake Gardiner, was the best of the defencemen, beating out his teammate thanks to a couple of chances while he was on with other partners.
