Morning Mashup: Cooling off the Heat

The Marlies tied up their Western Conference Semifinal series with Abbotsford last night, handing the Heat their first loss in twelve games. Matt Frattin, Korbinian Holzer and Ben Scrivens played especially strong games in a good overall effort by the Marlies to get themselves back on even terms with the series headed to British Columbia for the next three outings.

It was a 5-1 victory earned more on the defensive side of the puck than the scoreline might suggest. The Marlies killed all nine Abbotsford powerplays including a full two minute 5 on 3 kill, and another two abbreviated two man disadvantages. The Heat also outshot the Marlies 38 to 29 as Scrivens won the goaltending battle by a sizable margin over Abbotsford goalie Danny Taylor, who entered last night red hot on a nine-game winning streak.

Talk of the town Jerry D’Amigo had his AHL post season-leading sixth goal in five playoff games. A burgeoning offensive game, his contributions to the AHL’s best penalty kill, and his added speed and size suggest the 21-year-old has a very good chance at earning some NHL appearances next season.

Nazem Kadri meanwhile scored an empty net goal and added two assists. Gardiner had two assists while captain Ryan Hamilton scored a rare powerplay goal on a nifty move to pull the puck out from beside the net and around Taylor.

On paper the slight advantage lies with Abbotsford after earning the split and returning home for three straight home games. However, the Marlies have the edge in talent and clearly had Abbotsford outside of their comfort zone by making them play from behind after the first. Game 3 goes Saturday.

why I like the site so much is because I get to learn a little about guys like Zane Jones. I don’t get to watch Jr. hockey so can only go on scouting reports. He is slotted to go 151st overall in the 5th round by Nashville and this is the scouting report:
Nephew of Lanny McDonald, is a strapping battler who scouts see as a
player developing into a scorer. Learning the nuances of defensive
coverage and willing to drop the mitts. He is a long-term project who
    may reap future rewards.
Anybody know anything else about this kid? Sounds like a decent late round pick to me.

Never heard of this kid, but we could sure use some late round success. Sounds like BB’s type of guy too.

I think if I were a scout these are the types of guys I would push management to draft. Guys that will fight, hit and have size. That site lists him at 6’3″ 205lbs.

On the article posted by Burtonboy regarding Murray and Schultz, I’m not really sure what else Murray could have done. I thought the rumour was Burke wanted Schultz and Murray said NO, we’ll give you Gardiner. If Schultz is as good as they say how and why would Murray trade him away? Plus Murray can’t offer any more money. It’s really a kind of a stupid rule that let’s your draft pick just walk away.

Yeah I remember seeing something like this from a US broadcast before. Fans sent in questions and one of them was “why do people bang on the glass?” lol

Its part of the challenge for any GM isn’t it. He needs to make Anaheim as attractive as he can and be a good salesman for his organization.

BB did ask for Schultz. Perhaps Murray should have traded his rights earlier? Tough call if a player simply strings you along.

the only difference is Schultz is a more highly regarded prospect. If that were Kadri we had lost people would have been calling for Burkes head also I think.

Was reading a few comments, after Canada’s first game, on a few other sites. What really pisses me off is people who watch games and are very selective when placing blame….not many criticizing Sharp for not covering his man on the first goal, yet everybody shitting on Schenn for not effectively blocking the shot on the second goal. Not to mention the shit Dion gets when all he did was play the most minutes in the game and played very well IMO……people just love shitting on the Leafs….a shame these Fucktards don’t realize that, unlike some players, these two didn’t drop the ball when called upon to represent their country and should be applauded…as should all the players who wear our Canadian jersey so proudly….GO CANADA GO!!!
