The Leafs had another dismal start, falling behind in the first minute, but ended up on top of a wild opening period, up 3-2 and even in ES close chances.

The second looked like it could be a serious problem for Toronto; they were outclassed in chances, but they managed to surrender only a single goal, leaving the teams level heading to the final 20 minutes. After Rick Nash put the Rangers ahead early in the third, the Leafs managed a pair of goals to get back ahead, and then did a very good defensive job, not allowing the Rangers a chance on net until the final minute, a huge contrast from the lead they defended against Chicago last week.

In the last sixteen minutes of the second period, the Leafs were outchanced 8-2. Outside of that stretch, they were the better team, and coming out of that tough second period tied was a big success.

Richard Panik had an excellent game, as the winger has responded well to the increased ice time with Daniel Winnik out, including scoring a goal again tonight. Given that Panik had under 30% OZone starts, his +5 is quite impressive. Nazem Kadri also had an excellent game, joining Panik at +5 and chipping in with a couple of points. The top line, now together again, played a very familiar game, all -4 while generating a fair number of chances. David Clarkson was strong, a +4, while Leo Komarov, who had two points and the winning goal, was a -2. Sam Carrick wasn’t on for a Leaf chance, and was -3 in only a few minutes, while Josh Leivo was a -2 in his season debut.

Morgan Rielly didn’t have a great game on his return, a -4 on the back end. Roman Polak, who’s had a strong start, was even lower, finishing at -5. This is partly down to usage, as they both had very low OZone Start ratios. In contrast, Jake Gardiner had soft zone starts and was also the best defenceman on the team in chances, which included a great play on the winning goal. Stephane Robidas was the other defenceman better than even in ES Close chances.

It’s been feast or famine for Richard Panik, who was at the bottom of this table not long ago. After getting more ice-time and having some good games, he has risen almost to the top. James van Riemsdyk has now dropped to last among the regular players at ES close, while Peter Holland, despite a goal tonight, continues to plumb to the depths at ES overall.
