Toronto’s struggles continued in New Jersey, as they stretched their losing streak to a new franchise record.

The Leafs had a poor first period, falling behind and getting out-chanced 9-5, and gave up the first two chances of the second as well, along with another goal. Toronto were better after that second goal, but couldn’t score, and the Devils added a third going into the final period. The Leafs then earned a couple of power-plays, and were actually able to generate quite a few chances, but it wasn’t enough, as they only scored one goal.

The Leafs were badly out-chanced while the game was close, and even their third period success mostly came with the extra man, as they were pretty much level with New Jersey at ES in the frame.

The top line, and in particular Tyler Bozak and Phil Kessel, were basically invisible while the game was still close, as they were the only Leaf forwards not on for a single Leaf ES Close chance. They were stronger in the third period, and were responsible for the lone goal. Nazem Kadri was even at ES Close, but finished at +3 ES overall, another solid performance. The man of the game, though, was David Booth, who had his first really notable game as a Leaf, on for nine Leaf chances, and finishing a +4. Daniel Winnik had a tough game, finishing at -5, with Santorelli, Holland and Komarov all in the negative as well.

Morgan Rielly and Roman Polak had the toughest zone starts, and managed to finish even at ES Close, though both were in the negative overall. In contrast, Stephane Robidas and Korbinian Holzer had the best zone starts, and yet neither was on for an ES Close chance. While Holzer didn’t improve much in the second half of the game, Robidas was better, and finished at -1. Cody Franson and Jake Gardiner had similar games, finishing -2 at ES Close, but both getting back to even while the Leafs chased the game.
