A wild game started the Maple Leafs’ two-game trip out West.

Toronto fell behind Colorado in the first three minutes, but scored three power-play goals and found themselves level going into the third period. Tyler Bozak then took over, scoring a hat trick in less than sixteen minutes, as the Leafs eased home to a win.

Despite the high score, there weren’t a lot of chances, with the two teams finishing level, both on fifteen overall and twelve at even strength. The game was also close in possession numbers, with Toronto opening a lead late in the first only to be pulled back in the third. The Avalanche also had the better of the neutral zone, mostly down to their push in the final period.

After Colorado had the first few chances of the way, the Leafs opened up a lead with a 9-2 run that stretched into the middle of the second period. They then exchanged chances after that, but it was Toronto’s that ended up finding a way into the net.

Tyler Bozak, James van Riemsdyk and P.A. Parenteau had a great game, dominating chances in addition to producing points. They clearly got the better of Beauchemin and Johnson, the pairing that most regularly went up against them. They also had strong defensive numbers, and were the best line at preventing controlled entries into the Leaf zone.

Nazem Kadri’s line was also strong, finishing above even, although they weren’t able to control the Avalanche as well as that top line. The only players that really struggled were the fourth line, as Byron Froese, Joffrey Lupul and Brad Boyes were badly out-chanced and didn’t generate any offense themselves.

Roman Polak ended up shuffled with a number of partners in his 18 ES minutes; while he wasn’t very offensively effective, he was the only Leaf not on for a chance against. Jake Gardiner, who had four points, also had a good night, and he was the top defenceman in terms of chance differential.
