The Maple Leafs had three games in four nights for the second week in succession. Like last week, they really seemed to struggle as the game progressed.

This time, though, Jonathan Bernier played very well to keep them in it, and the Leafs were twice able to answer Boston’s goals. It looked like they might manage to sneak out of the game with at least a point, but a Martin Marincin giveaway in the last minute saw Brad Marchand score a heart-breaking winning goal.

Toronto were close to even in possession after the opening frame, but fell away over the rest of the game, and ended up considerably behind in Corsi. We see the same pattern in chances, with a good Toronto start followed by overwhelming Bruin domination. The home team also had the better of the neutral zone, with a clear advantage in the number of entries.

The Leafs had a great powerplay midway through the first, and were looking like they might be able to take the lead, but that was their last burst of consistent pressure. From that point on, they were out-chanced 24-6, and they gave up nine of the last ten chances, which doesn’t even include the winning goal.

The bottom line had another tough night as they were very badly out-chanced. Josh Leivo and Bryon Froese both finished worst among the forwards, at -7. The Bozak line, which was given the bulk of the minutes against Patrice Bergeron, also finished with really poor numbers, with all three players at least -5 in chance differential. Leo Komarov and Nazem Kadri had the best numbers, thanks to a couple of chances they earned in a 4-on-4 shift without Michael Grabner, who was otherwise quite poor as well.

Martin Marincin was the lone Leaf to finish in the positive in chances, although he was ultimately responsible for the winning goal going against Toronto. Jake Gardiner had a rough game, as he and Dion Phaneuf — who mostly avoided Bergeron — were both on for at least ten Boston chances. Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly were better, but their numbers were still bad on an overall terrible night for the Leafs defence.
