Toronto’s makeshift lineup proved it was still capable of pulling off a win, as they moved into a rare lead against Carolina, with a late P.A. Parenteau goal providing some insurance.

Jonathan Bernier played well in holding off the Hurricane attack, and the team as a whole had a strong game.

This was another game in which Toronto dominated possession, and while the Hurricanes were able to narrow their advantage while chasing the lead late, the Leafs finished comfortably ahead. The Leafs had an amazing opening period in terms of chances, and that ended up carrying them to an overall win in the statistic. Carolina did manage a clear advantage in the controlled entries.

A spectacular start for Toronto saw them earn eleven of the first twelve chances, and they were unfortunate not to be able to turn that into a lead. The Leafs generated only five chances in the rest of the game, but managed to turn two of those into goals.

Three of the Leaf lines finished about even. Mark Arcobello ended up the best of the forwards, as he managed to avoid being on the ice for any Hurricanes’ chances, even while his regular linemates, Josh Leivo and Parenteau, were on for a couple. Nazem Kadri, with Michael Grabner and Brendan Leipsic, had strong controlled entries numbers, as usual, and Grabner and Leipsic both finished with strong chance numbers. Brad Boyes played less than any other Leaf forward, and was one of only two Leafs not on for an ES chance.

Viktor Loov was moved onto a pairing with Frank Corrado, and that duo had a very strong evening, the only two defencemen to finish above even. They had similar match-ups to Jake Gardiner and Stuart Percy, but finished well ahead in chance differential. Gardiner also had poor numbers in preventing controlled entries, though that may be down to him getting more minutes as the Hurricanes pushed for an equalizer. Morgan Rielly and Martin Marincin matched up mostly against Jordan Staal’s line, and finished around even.
