Planet Smashers – MLHS Music Podcast
Mike Sullivan (@mickeysullz) and I sat down with lead singer and all-around fantastic guy, Matt Collyer of Ska/Punk legends, Planet Smashers.
We covered the Leafs (clearly), being a Leaf fan in Montreal and why he was emailing with Dion Phaneuf. It was a ton of fun and we hope ya’ll enjoy it.
A quick bio:
Emerging from the rather unlikely locale of Montreal, Quebec, ska revivalists the Planet Smashers were formed in 1994 by singer/guitarist Matt Collyer, bassist Dave Cooper, saxophonist Leon Kingston, trombonist Kurt Ruzenisky, and drummer Tim Doyle. Debuting with a 1996 self-titled effort for their own STOMP imprint, later that year they also issued the EP Inflate to 45 RPM. Attack of the Planet Smashers appeared in 1998, followed by Life of the Party a year later. By this point the band’s lineup had shifted to include Collyer, Cooper, saxophonist Neil “Lonestar” Johnson, trombonist Andrew Lattoni, and drummer Scott Russell. They’d also built a respectable following throughout North America, touring with bands like Mustard Plug, AFI, Samiam, and the Aquabats, among others, and STOMP was doing well as a ska- and punk-flavored indie. the Planet Smashers remained consistent over the years, dropping No Self Control in 2001, Fabricated in 2002, and Mighty in 2004. The DVD Ten appeared in 2004 as well, documenting the band’s first ten years together with interviews, music videos, live footage, and more, while the band spent several weeks on the summer’s Vans Warped Tour. Unstoppable was next issued in 2005.

@wiski They were playing the Opera House in T.O. and we went and had a drink at a pub next door. There was a DJ setting up that I asked if she could not to play while we were recording for 5 minutes and she said sure and turned it up instead. Bitch move.
anyone else see this off the leafs page? http://mapleleafs.nhl.com/club/page.htm?id=87726&navid=DL|TOR|home
@djamon I know… That scares the hell out of me. We were so lucky to beat them in that last game. Leafs need to start playing their best tomorrow night. No more excuses. We need a few guys to really amp up their games: Frattin needs to get going – Boy we could use his offense. He was a bull to start the season. Leafs need to get him fired up again. Grabo needs to get his offense going. At the very least he needs to be what he has been in the past – A dogged skater who beats guys via sheer will. Dion needs to stop making stupid mistakes. The Leafs will not make the playoffs is he continues to play the way he has so far this season (with a few notable exceptions).
@Kong It’s definitely sustainable. They’re doing this without Spezza, Karlsson, Anderson, Michalek and Cowan. They might be as good as the Bruins.
I guess I could say the same for Ottawa and Montreal, who both just keep on rolling. It pains me to say this, but the Habs have a really good team this year. The Sens are playing above their heads, but it may be sustainable given how well they are being coached.
For those of you who knocked me for suggesting the Winnipeg Jets are for real… 3-1 Jets over Boston. The Jets are legit. Who saw this one coming? Not me.
I wonder if Gillis takes his head out of his ass re-Luongo for the deadline. Not saying I’d be interested. Gillis can suck it.
@keon I honestly don’t see Nonis doing much of anything for the deadline. Sounds like he’s comfortable going past with MacA and Bozak unsigned (I suppose that makes sense if we are still in the race but if we are offered a late 1st for either for them, I’d take it).
