The Maple Leafs put Garret Sparks in the deep end against the Oilers, but they started well, limiting Edmonton’s chances early and going ahead on the power-play.

After Edmonton made a push late in the second period, with Sparks managing to hold on, Toronto had a great third. They shut down the Oilers attack in the third, and added two insurance goals to secure the victory.

There were relatively few chances in the game, and the Leafs actually ended up out-chanced at even strength, as they had most of their success on the power-play. Seven ES chances is a pretty meager total, but the Leafs were defending a lead for most of the game, and had good overall possession numbers. They again won the neutral zone, although the Oilers had the better of controlled entries, likely due to chasing the game.

Edmonton really threatened at the end of the second period, with six chances in the last six minutes. With a power-play going over the intermission break, it looked like the Leafs might be in tough. They responded perfectly, limiting Edmonton to only a single chance in the final frame, and out-chancing them 4-1 at ES.

None of the Leafs lines really managed to light it up offensively, but the best of them was the line responsible for all three goals, as Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov were the only two Leaf forwards to finish above even in chance differential, and were strong in possession numbers as well. The line of Spaling, Grabner and Winnik got a match-up against the Hall line, and had trouble controlling Leon Draisaitl, who was the most dangerous of the Edmonton forwards.

Tyler Bozak’s line was also out-chanced, as Bozak and P.A. Parenteau produced only one ES chance. After a good game in Washington, Peter Holland, Brad Boyes and Byron Froese generated no chances, doing little offensively in ten ES minutes. The bottom two lines also failed to produce many controlled entries, with the Holland line unimpressive given that they mostly avoided the top Oiler unit.

Dion Phaneuf and Jake Gardiner, who mostly paired with the Kadri line, were the only Leaf defencemen to break even in chances, while Morgan Rielly and Matt Hunwick were again clearly out-chanced, as they — like the Bozak line — had a tough time against Draisaitl. Martin Marincin and Roman Polak again avoided tough match-ups, but produced very little offensively.
