Toronto took a first period lead over the division-leading Panthers, but things went south after that.

A couple of powerplay goals saw the Panthers move ahead in the second. While the Leafs did generate some chances in response, they couldn’t score. Florida widened their lead in the third period, cruising to a big win.

The chances were close in the first period, but Florida pulled away over the last two frames. While Toronto was able to close the Corsi gap while chasing the game in the third period, they weren’t able to do the same thing in chances. The Leafs were able to win the last two periods in terms of carrying the neutral zone, but that didn’t end up helping them much.

The Panthers had the first six chances of the game, but Toronto closed the first period on a good run and were good value for their lead. Toronto had a bit of a pushback late in the second, after Florida had dominated most of the period, but Jokinen’s goal ended that momentum, and the Leafs were heavily out-chanced after that.

All-star Leo Komarov was the best Leaf forward, getting a lot of defensive zone starts but finishing in the positive in chances, along with a great number in carrying the neutral zone. Nazem Kadri’s numbers weren’t quite as good, as in his three ES minutes without Leo he was on for a couple of chances against. Peter Holland also got minutes on that trio, and Holland had excellent possession numbers when put with Komarov and Kadri, matching up mostly against the Jagr line.

Tyler Bozak’s line ended up being clearly out-chanced, though they were given a lot of defensive zone starts, and were given more ES ice time than any other line. Nick Spaling returned to the line-up, and had a solid night in chances, doing well with Holland for a time and also teaming effectively with Joffrey Lupul. The one line that really struggled was the bottom three, who didn’t generate a single chance.

There was not a lot of difference between the defensive pairings, as most of the blueliners ended up slightly below even. The one exception was Martin Marincin, who played over fifteen ES minutes and managed to finish at even. Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly were both -2, playing mostly against the Jagr line, while Dion Phaneuf and Jake Gardiner had poor possession numbers against the Trochek line, both finishing in the negative as well.
