The Maple Leafs got off to a miserable start to their last pre-All Star game, with Steven Stamkos scoring early on the powerplay and Jonathan Bernier needing to stand on his head to keep Toronto down by only one.

The Leafs were the better team after that, but they couldn’t find a way past Andrei Vasilevskiy, going 0-for-2 on their Florida trip.

Ten minutes into the game, the Leafs had just two Corsi events, and only one shot on goal, which went with a poor chance showing. The second period was better, chipping away at the Lightning advantage and finishing just ahead in Corsi. The chance story was similar, as the Leafs were able to cut the huge chance deficit early to just three at ES and ended up finishing ahead — though narrowly — in zone entries.

Fifteen of the first sixteen chances of the game went to the Lightning, so Toronto making out of that stretch down by only one was a testament to Bernier’s work. The Leafs responded with nine of the next eleven chances, and pressed early in the third as well, with the first five chances of the final period. However, they weren’t able to do much late in the game, with only one chance for in the last eight minutes.

The top two lines ended up finishing strong, with Nazem Kadri’s line dominating controlled entries and finishing even. Leo Komarov and Michael Grabner were not far behind. Peter Holland, with Tyler Bozak and P.A. Parenteau, produced a similar result, although they were given more offensive zone starts. All three forwards finished even or slightly in the negative.

The fourth line had a nice response after their poor game in Sunrise, generating a couple of chances. The third line, led by Joffrey Lupul, were all at least -2 in the negative despite getting very few defensive zone starts.

Frank Corrado featured in less than six ES minutes in this game but was excellent at driving chances in that time, on for almost one ES chance a minute playing mostly with Dion Phaneuf.

Jake Gardiner had the worst numbers with a -7 chance differential and terrible possession figures alongside Roman Polak.

Like Corrado, Morgan Rielly paired well with Dion Phaneuf, as his numbers saw a substantial lift once he was away from Matt Hunwick.
