Toronto had one of its strongest games in a while against the Rangers, carrying the possession and play for much of the night.

However, they found themselves behind going into the third period, and suffered a heart-breaking loss when Colin Greening’s equalizer was erased on a Morgan Rielly giveaway less than a minute later.

Toronto almost doubled up the Rangers in 5-on-5 Corsi, and limited the Rangers to only six ES chances. They also dominated the neutral zone, limiting the Rangers to very few controlled entries. To have that much of the play only to lose is a very disappointing result.

After a strong start for Toronto, the Rangers had six chances in a row, which included their first two goals. The Leafs then dominated play after that, taking fifteen of the next seventeen chances. It was the last one, though — Stepan’s goal — that was the killer.

After a poor game in Chicago, Mark Arcobello, Colin Greening and P.A. Parenteau had a great night. They matched up mostly against Viktor Stalberg’s line, and were offensively excellent. Greening led the team, on for nine ES chances, and the other two were each on for at least seven.

Nazem Kadri and Michael Grabner had a strong start with Leo Komarov, but were fairly quiet after Komarov had been given a match penalty for his hit to Ryan McDonagh.

The fourth line were quiet, as was the third, as Daniel Winnik and Nick Spaling were hardly on for any chances despite playing a decent number of minutes. That might be down to controlled entries, as that line allowed few and had few themselves.

Viktor Loov played his first NHL game, mostly teaming on the bottom pairing with Martin Marincin. Loov finished at even, while Marincin was on for chances in his shifts with other defencemen. Not playing with Matt Hunwick, Morgan Rielly had an excellent offensive game, teaming with Frank Corrado to form an effective pairing while playing mostly against the Zuccarello line. Roman Polak and Jake Gardiner were also strong, the best duo at preventing chances.
