In their last home game of the season, the Maple Leafs took the lead early in the second period, with Morgan Rielly scoring a nice shorthanded goal.

Things fell apart after that, with Columbus taking the by the end of the period. Three goals in a four minute stretch in the third period then blew the score open as Toronto finished their home season with a whimper.

While the scoreline was lopsided, there wasn’t much between the teams in most of the possession stats. They finished level in Corsi, and actually won the chance battle, as well as being even in the neutral zone. The result is an indictment of Garret Sparks, as Columbus managed five goals on only twelve chances.

There weren’t any real runs of sustained chances from either team, but Columbus had five in a row that included two goals and built out their lead. Toronto was at least able to put up some fight, managing the last four chances of the game, even with the score out of reach.

Tyler Bozak, with Tobias Lindberg and P.A. Parenteau, finished level in chances, despite getting the hardest zone starts. They did struggle to prevent controlled entries, easily the worst number on the team. Mike Babcock used Brooks Laich, Frederik Gauthier and Michael Grabner against the Dubinsky line, and they were the one Leaf line to clearly lose a match-up. Dubinsky scored twice and the line all finishing at least -2 in chances.

The only line in the positive was Brad Boyes’ unit, which had a quiet game but posted good defensive numbers.

It wasn’t a great night for Jake Gardiner, who was the worst Leaf defenceman in chances, playing mostly with Frank Corrado, who was also in the negative. Only Andrew Campbell managed to be in the positive in terms of chances. Morgan Rielly and Martin Marincin were even on the night.
