Leafs hit the ice

Hockey is in the air. Players around the NHL have finally started to take to the ice for scrimmages and practices, despite the whole lockout thing.

There isn’t anything to report on the CBA front, but hopefully with the sense that hockey should be around the corner, the folks in charge can buckle down and get something set up. Though it isn’t necessarily about hammering out a deal over the course of many hours, as Clarke MacArthur mentioned yesterday:

“It just shows there’s still some work to be done,” said MacArthur. “Maybe instead of going at it every day, it’s better to take some time. And think things over, and reassess.”

With talks stalled, maybe MacArthur is right and when the NHL and PA get back to it, they can do so with more reasonable proposals.

Both sides are greedy selfish bastards…but I’m actually behind the players a bit this time around…the owners got their precious salary cap last time..the owners are the ones offerring these ridiculous salaries…and now their back in there crying poor wanting to re write the deal all over again….just split the revenues 50-50 and get on with it…..both sides make me sick….

I hear ya…but if the cap goes down…..its going to be extremely difficult to move any players because either nobody is going to have the money..or nobody is going to have the cap space…..it would be interesting to say the least…as Whalz says….buyouts perhaps..

I just think there’s a real potential for things to blow up….if he can’t address the goaltending or the center position..and the team struggles and misses the playoffs….fans and possibly new ownership may be calling for a new GM by Christmas….

Agreed. No way I let the players off the hook, they’re just as greedy as the owners. There’s plenty of cash, get it done.

I think amnesty buyouts are a foregone conclusion.  The teams most effected by the drop would be Vancouver and San Jose.  They are the only teams who probably can’t get under the cap with just a buy-out.  For example, Ballard bought out and Luongo traded for just futures still doesn’t make the Canucks cap compliant.  Likewise, the Sharks could buy-out Havlat, trade Murray, and still have to make a trade or two to get under the cap.

Its a chicken and the egg scenario…without the players…ther is no show..no fans and no money….without the owners..there is no arena..no teams….no league…who’s worth the most?? tough call..they both need each other…

U know what my parents used to do when my brother and I couldn’t decide on who got the last chocolate……the split it evenly between both of us….other sports are 50-50 and NHL ownership wants the same thing…..get it done

Nah, I think the people running the team know what they have, and realize it may not show up in the standings just yet.  If Burke can’t address the goaltending, it’s not as though another GM could.  To me, it’s kind of a silly thing to pin on Burke.  Does anyone actually believe he doesn’t want to address goaltending?  The opportunity has to be there.  He doesn’t have a magic wand.
    -
I believe the plan is to be competitive when Phil Kessel is 27-30 and in his prime.  If that’s the plan, than the people at the top would be aware of it, and understand not rushing to bring in a Luongo or what have you.  What the fans think is completely irrelevant in my opinion – they are far more destructive than helpful at this point.
    -
That said, I believe if the cap drops to 58 million, Backstrom will be our goaltender.

Sorry-  I meant I will do the regular one.  I have participated in prior fantasy leagues with different teams on both my primary and secondary emails.  I provided my secondary email as it is posted on an open site so would prefer to redraft a team rather than carry my prior team associated with this email.  That was my point.  Thanks

Do you think it will take that long. There was real deep anger at the ACC when they were calling for Wilson’s head. That anger will turn it’s attention to Burke next if the Leafs don’t start well

Except that the owners don’t really need the players.  They are all guys who have made their fortunes elsewhere.  They’re not obligated to lose millions paying primadonnas to play a game.  I think the players need the owners more.

Yeh..you might be right…its really tough to get a read on the new ownership group thus far….they are very quiet..and oddly enough Burke has never been quieter…I just know one thing..Rogers and Bell are the two greediest companies in this country…and I think they will be looking for payoff on their investment….translation….playoff revenues sooner rather than later…

Agreed. I gotta say though, all these players whining about “fair” being 57% is really pissing me off. How can they not see it’s not sustainable? Owners get only 43% and must cover what you mentioned, plus dozens of support employees wages. benefits, etc.

Well, the team is more profitable than ever even without the playoffs.  If the cap goes down to 58 million, that’s just another 12 million in their pockets without lifting a finger.  If Rogers and Bell want to move things in the right direction they would do well to preach patience, and encourage their many media outlets to do the same.

Problem is the media that surrounds the team are a bunch of ass hats that will rattle the cage and get the mass of feable minded fairweather fans upset. Oilers seem to have a free pass at sucking for like 4 years cause they supposedly “have a plan” but Burke can’t be given the same amount of time to build the leafs from am even more pathetic state. Burke was given a 6 year deal for a reason, unfortunatly the masses of leaf fans don’t understand that building a team as decrepit as the leafs was gonna take some time.
