I’d expect Holzer and Kostka to begin the season with the Leafs. Frattin’s a lock. Kadri and Scrivens depend on Luongo situation.

Been saying I thought Koska had a chance. Surprised, but pleased Fraser called up. Marlies are going to hurt.

Rynnas can pick up most of the slack if Scrivens stays with the Leafs so goaltending won`t be an issue… scoring will drop though with no Frattin or Kadri… I still don`t understand the Defence situation at all we have roughly 10 D-men that people expect to make the team

For all the playoff apologists out there who says to hell with where the Leafs draft and don’t care what it takes to get into the playoffs, here is a rundown of the first rounders for the Leafs over the past decade by making deep runs in the playoffs (but no trips to the SC Final) or just missing the playoffs but not completely bottoming out:

    1999 –
    Luca Cereda (C)
    2000 – Brad Boyes
    2001 -Carlo Colaiacovo
    2002 – Alex Steen
2003 – traded to SJ and flipped to Bos (picked Mark Stuart)
2004- traded to NYR and flipped to CGY (picked Kris Chucko)
    2005- Tuukka Rask
    2006- Jiri Tlusty
2007 – traded to SJ and flipped to STL (pickd Lars Eller)
    2008- Luke Schenn
    2009- Nazem Kadri
2010- traded to Bos (Tyler Seguin)
2011- traded to Bos (Dougie Hamilton)
2011- drafted Tyler Biggs and Stuart Percy
    2012- Morgan Reilly

Looking at that list, not one elite player was picked except perhaps Rask but was dealt before he could wear a Leaf uniform.  And Seguin/Hamilton of course was never picked by the Leafs but at least one of them is a proven NHL elite talent.

Folks, just getting into the playoffs and picking yet another player who will fill your 3rd/4th line just won’t cut it.  We just spent more than a decade doing the “let’s win now” and you have seen the results.

Tanking won’t guarantee Nathan McKinnon but still get’s us close to choosing from a McKinnon/Jones/Barkov/Druion/Monahan.

Getting Luongo will no doubt stabilize our goaltending but he won’t have anyone elite to surround him with.  And no gauarentee we will land Perry/Getzlaf this summer.

I pray Nonis gets it this time.  But I have a funny feeling his strings will be pulled ala JFJ…

So, as of right now, they have 26 guys up?

    Lupul – Bozak – Kessel
    JVR – Grabovski – Kulemin
    MacArthur – Kadri – Frattin
    Komarov – McClement – Brown
    Steckel – Connolly – Lombardi

    Gunnarsson – Phaneuf
    Liles – Komisarek
    Gardiner – Franson
    Fraser – Holzer
    Kostka

    Reimer
    Scrivens

23 man roster, so 3 have to go down, or go.

I understand the excitement about a Luongo coming here but it’s typical Leafs fans soaking up the nostalgia of a player who will not be around when the Leafs will be “serious” playoff contenders.  Not just battling for eighth place.  If they were dealing for Jonathan Bernier who will grow for many years with the young core, I am all for it.  But not for a goalie who turns 34 this April.

I am just happy with the roster as is.  It certainly won’t equal a playoff spot automatically.  Leaf fans can stomach at least another losing season, certainly a shortened one.

“Tanking won’t guarantee Nathan McKinnon but still get’s us close to choosing from a McKinnon/Jones/Barkov/Druion/Monahan.”

In years gone by it may have, but the lottery rules have changed with the new CBA. All teams that finish out of the playoffs now have the same chance to select number 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5. 17th or 30th, no difference in the odds.

Thats not what I’ve been reading. Equal chance for every team that doesn’t make the playoffs. Could be wrong though.
