Leafs trade Matthew Lombardi to Phoenix for conditional 3rd or 4th round pick

The draft pick is a fourth rounder in 2014, which could become a third if Lombardi re-signs in Phoenix or records a certain number of points with the Coyotes this season.

Obviously, this is better than using the amnesty buy out because a) the Leafs get a pick, and b) retain both of those buyout options for the summer period should they want to exercise them. The Leafs will pay his $500,000 bonus and retain some of his base salary in order to off load the cap hit.

There has been almost no mention of Matthew Lombardi throughout camp and it was pretty clear his place wasn’t here this season. He would’ve just been in the way of the advancement of the likes of Nazem Kadri and I would’ve been more than a little PO’ed if we had to watch another game with Lombardi miscast on the checking line wasting everybody’s time.

A mid round pick is a pretty good get for a misfit piece of Lombardi’s circumstances. In moving him, the Leafs free up $3.5 million in cap space, taking them down to around $62.5 million in cap payroll.

I think that would be the deal that gets done-  Connolly.  They probably want Bozak and Kadri which would be the hold up.  Nonis stating keeping youth means Kadri and probably Bozak.  I like Bozak and think that he will continue to progress and maybe become a 2C.  If so, he and Grabbo would be interchangeable as 2a/2b Centres.  That way if our new 1C or either of the 2 get injured we still have a 1C/2C intact.  I like that flexibility.  Connolly will not be here for a longer term and will be more expensive than Bozak.

Capgeek hasn’t moved out Lombardi yet and has $4.1mm space.  Assuming we move min $2m of Lombardi’s and add $1.7m for Kadri we have $4.4m space. We could keep $1.5m of Connolly’s salary in a deal for Luongo and $7.5m of space for Luongo and then $2m in any swap at trade deadline as required.  Would prefer to get a different goalie like Backstrom if we could sign him first as condition of trade.

I do like that Nonis already have started using the possibility to retain salary.

What Nonis needs to do this to structure the trade for Luongo so that actual salary paid and cap hit match when Luongo retires, then we will not have any cap hit going forward.

This also makes Komisarek a moveable object so for instance Isles.

If we send Komisarek to Isles and keep 50% of his salary. Isles will have 4.5 million cap hit to put on their books.

We get DiPietro and 1st around pick 2013 and 3rd round pick 2014.

So Leafs pay Isles 26 million for 1st and 3rd.

I wonder if we use both of our amnesty buyouts on maybe Komisarek and Liles or we retain Liles and make a trade where we take on a bad contract plus high pick to buyout.
