The Toronto Rumour Mill is buzzing today with word of the Leafs and Bolts in talks for the 2nd overall pick in this years NHL Entry Draft.
Hockey Night In Canada’s Elliotte Friedman broke the worst kept secret in the NHL, leading up to this years draft, that the Leafs were rumoured to be talking to the Tampa Bay Lightning about getting their #2 Overall pick.
The deal said to be under discussion would involve Toronto sending their 7th Overall pick to the Lightning in exchange for Tampa’s 2nd Overall pick, Ryan Malone and one other player. Well as the day has gone on more details have emerged. Brian Burke has confirmed Tampa has asked that Luke Schenn and Thomas Kaberle be included in this deal.
Now, I don’t know about any of you, but is the 2nd Overall pick this year (it’s safe to assume it’ll be Victor Hedman, or Matt Duchene) worth Toronto’s 2008 5th Overall Pick, 2009 7th Overall Pick, and Thomas Kaberle? And let’s not forget we are taking back Ryan Malone. I for one am very happy we have Brian Burke, god can only wonder what JFJ would have done.
What would you do?

Although I would love to see Tavares on the leafs, having both B Schenn and Cowen is one of the best ideas. Think about how many top 10 picks turn out to be busts….quite a few, but what are the chances of BOTH being busts….very slim, making sure we take a huge step closer to building a contending team, also not giving too much away that took SOOOOOO long to build right

This is only Tampbay’s opening proposal and knowing there not going going to be persuing tavarez because stamkoks and lecavliver are there centeremen for the future may work in burkes favour. Burke has been analyzing there team and knows what they want for there needs to be adressed. A 1,2 d-man for the future and a 1,2 d man for the future and the releif of the heafty contract of ryan malone, mezaros etc.
I send : To the Bolts: Thomas Kaberle
Anton Strawlman
7th overall pick ( Cowen?)
To Toronto: 2nd overallpick
Malone
Now you have to make sure you can etain the 1 pick and i would give the 2nd overall plus Grabovski who doesnt fit the mold of burkes tuff style anyways

How is Kaberle and taking hefty salaries off their books not enough to move up 5 spots in the draft? I don’t think Burke will be adding anybody like Stralman or Schenn to a deal to move up to 2nd.

How can you say Grabovski doesn’t fit into Burke’s tough style?
Did the Sedins, Naslund or Morrison play tough in Vancouver?
Oh yea, it’s Tomas Kaberle and Anton Stralman – not Thomas Kaberle and Anton Strawlman!

what bothers me is that people are forgetting that our pick this year isn’t all that bad. We could still drafat a Khadri or Larsson or Cowen.
Tampa wants Luke, Kaberle and our First so that we could do them a favour and take Malone, and their first. I think that if Tampa wants the package that is being talked about they should include two prospects!!!

Burke said word for word “Is taking 17 mil of contract(Malone) worth moving up 5 spots in the draft? NO!”….so any of these deals will probably not going to happen because Burke doesnt feel its worth it, and hes kinda right. Unless its a gurantee to draft Tavares I would just stay put and draft Cowen or Schenn

I have to disagree with Burke, I think Duschene or Hedman is worth taking on 17 million dollars over the next 4 years at an average of 4.25 each.
Not only that, but the Leafs would also get a tough Top 6 forward in Ryan Malone!

I think if it came down to it, if the Lightning offered the 2nd pick and Malone for the 7th pick, Burke would do it, right now I just think he’s saying that because the Lightning’s asking price is ridiculous.

So we take on their mistakes, give them a young player that is proving himself only at 18 years old, a premier puck moving defenseman capable of 60+ points, extra prospects, and first + second round picks? Wow! These morons in Tampa are dreaming in technicolour! How about they give us their pick to take Vinny’s giant contract off their hands? Giving their tickets away is not a surefire method of paying for it anyway.
I’d rather move up a spot or two to guarantee us Cowen, since Tavares is for sure going to New York. Snow was going to pick Hedmann (sp?), but after consulting with his fans (what a GM, eh?) he’ll take a pass on him.

If I was Burke i’d move Kaberle, Grabovski and the 7th overall 2009 pick, for the 2nd overall 2009 pick, then trade the 2nd overall pick and Kubina or someone to the Islanders for their 1rst round pick and grab Tavares.
If the kids a bust, the Leafs loose bigtime.
If the kids a stud, the Leafs win bigtime.
Risky either way

OR you move Kaberle, Schenn and 7th overall for 2nd overall and Lecavalier, then trade up for tavares with the 2nd overall and kubina or someone they want.
Tavares + Lecavalier = wins
