The Maple Leafs had penalty killing troubles again in the first period against Arizona, giving up two goals to fall behind.

There weren’t a lot of chances in a low-event game, but the Leafs managed to give up two more goals to fall behind 4-1, before a late push ended up falling short.

The two teams were pretty even in the first two periods, but as the Leafs went for the win in the third they opened up a solid advantage in Corsi. This was also reflected in the chances, where the Leafs had the advantage at even strength but couldn’t turn that into a lead on the scoreboard. The neutral zone battle was won by the Leafs, but most of that also came down to the third period, when Toronto opened up most of their advantage.

Arizona mustered only two ES chances in the first period, but still found themselves ahead after the frame. One good Leaf shift was responsible for most of their chances in the second period, while the Leafs failed to get level early in the third. Arizona struck with the back-breaking fourth goal not long after.

Brad Boyes and Marc Arcobello didn’t get a lot of ES ice-time, but were the most effective with it thanks to a couple of good shifts on the offensive end. Neither was on for a single ES chance against.

The top line was also solid again, as they were all positive in chances as well and finished with strong neutral zone numbers. They were the worst line at preventing Arizona from entering with control, a consistent issue for this unit.

Michael Grabner, P.A. Parenteau and Peter Holland were given the most defensive zone starts on the team, and weren’t able to generate offense, finishing at the bottom of the chance percentage list, although they had very few controlled entries either way.

Martin Marincin had one of his strongest games from a chance percentage perspective, as he and Roman Polak also had solid numbers in the neutral zone, through they were the ES pairing that played the least.

Scott Harrington also finished with good chance numbers, and so did his partner Morgan Rielly, as that pair played a lot of minutes. The pairing that struggled in chances was Dion Phaneuf and Matt Hunwick, who were the only tandem to finish in the negative in terms of chances.
