Three to junior:
- Travis Dermott (Erie)
- Andrew Nielsen (Lethbridge)
- Dmytro Timashov (Quebec).
Babcock remarked on all three junior-bound prospects in a positive manner last night after the game.
“Timashov I thought has played well. I really liked Dermott and Nielsen tonight. The kids, I thought they played great.”
If their rookie tournament and preseason showings were any indication (and they aren’t always), Timashov and Dermott should be in for good junior years in their respective Leagues.
As for the returning Marlies: It’ll be impressive in its own right if Gauthier can be an effective shutdown center for Sheldon Keefe in his first pro season. The challenge for Keefe’s development staff will come in bringing out an offensive dimension from Gauthier. It’s his first pro season, so there’s still hope here.
It’s pretty obvious Casey Bailey needs to be a dedicated pupil of skating coach Barb Underhill.
It’s a little surprising Leivo is such an early cut — not in the context of his most recent season, but it is if we think back to when he made the team out of camp in 2013. After a rocky 2014-15 season, Leivo is looking to stay healthy and find his offensive game again at the AHL level; he has shown he can do it when he scored 23 in 59 games two seasons ago.
