A Hopeful Tuesday
Share

There might have been a little somethin’ somethin’ crowding your Twitter feed last night, forcing you to miss the updates (or lack thereof.. in this case, possibly a good thing) from the latest round of NHL/NHLPA meetings. No word about what went down, but the negotiating session lasted seven hours and ended with plans to resume talks today (Wednesday).

Considering the last meeting between the two sides took about 10 minutes and preceded two weeks of stalemate, this seems to be a good sign. They’re talking at length, and a process that’s been riddled with posturing has broken for some welcomed silence and secrecy.

Perhaps a few missed paycheques and the cancelation of the Winter Classic has injected the necessary urgency to arrive at an agreement that really isn’t that far out of reach.

Or maybe I’m just brimming with hope after last night.

Personally I would like to see a change at the top of the League and the PA . Bettman even though I think he doesn’t get credit for the good things he’s done carries to much baggage. We need a more conciliatory comish . I also feel a truly great union leader knows the right time to strike/ fight and the right time to make a deal. The union leader that knows how to make a deal is by far the best for any union. The PA are still fighting old battles and Fehr and the radicals have done the majority of PA members a dis-service from that perspective IMO. Hopefully he does see that this thing has run its course and now is the time to cut your loses and make a deal.

Agree on the too much baggage part for Bettman. I’ll let other better writers write the scathing eulogies when he’s gone.

Cynically I believe this lockout lasting till November was in the cards all along. The southern owners looked at their spread sheets and decided that they could lose the gate for November and October. Southern fans are busy watching football and don’t come out to games and the NBC TV doesn’t kick in till January. And the financial savings from not paying players 250 million or so just helped their balance sheets.

They get to use the lockout to save money and use as leverage in negotiations. There’s no cutting loses for Fehr. It’ll be the owners that pull the trigger.

I can’t say I’m a big fan of this league expansion idea being talked about earlier on by some posters. A 30 team league is barely working and keeping teams financially sound, adding a couple more teams may push some teams over the edge.

Don’t agree . Fehr had to know before we even got to the lockout of the inevitability that it was going to be a 50/50 split. Every other League in NA is at or below 50/50 including baseball. If he didn’t he’s stupid IMO. I’m convinced any deal signed right now could have been had without a lockout if he had been willing to negotiate within the system. He tried to de-link with every single offer he made. He banked on the owners blinking but the League made good on every single deadline they imposed.

It would sum up Bettman’s tenure if the league was expanded to be honest. I’d be all for moving teams to places in Canada that can maintain the fanbase but I’d definitely be 100% against expanding the league to 32 teams etc.

Just curious Scottish Leaf as I know very little about the football leagues in Europe . Is this getting much attention across the pond or is it just a red herring ?

Haven’t really heard much about it Burton but there was talk that UEFA/FIFA were going to impose salary caps years ago to stop teams over-spending and becoming debt ridden. A prime example would be Rangers FC in our Scottish Premier League who managed to rack up £134 million in debt before being liquidated and re-emerging in the Third Division of Scotland.

The salary stuff would be smart though, as FIFA are trying to impose new financial fair play where teams in Europe can only spend x % of their total income for a season and not spending more than that.

I found it kind of interesting but I would imagine the big teams would really fight this . I’ve also heard some Fomula 1 teams are proposing a cap on team spending as well. Don’t think its getting a very favourable response either but it would level the playing field
