The Maple Leafs have signed 2014 eighth overall draft pick William Nylander to a three-year entry level deal.

This of course is standard business and changes nothing as far as the options available to the Leafs and Nylander this Fall, of which there are three: back to MoDo in the SHL, down to the Marlies, or even Mississauga of the OHL, although the latter-most seems unlikely.

According to Article 9.1(d)(i) of the CBA, if Nylander plays less than 10 games for the Leafs this year — regardless of where (including the Marlies or the SHL) — his contract will slide because he’s in year 1 of his Standard Player Contract.

welcome to the Leafs Nation !!

Aren’t there 4 slide rule contracts? Gauthier, Verhaeghe, Valiev, and Nylander? If Nylander goes to Sweden, does that count against our contracts, or does it slide?

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Cameron19 Good question.  Where is our in-house legal counsel?

  • TML__fan

Assuming he’s not quite ready to make the jump to the NHL, then who makes the final decision as to whether he plays with MoDo or the Marlies?  I’d assume it is a collective decision, but who makes the final say?  Wouldn’t the Marlies make more sense, as in he’ll learn the Leafs’ systems and then be available as a possible call-up if someone gets injured on the big club?

  • TheCanucksnaphook

TML__fan Final say is going to end up with Nonis/Shanny/Carlyle.

  • Cameron19

TML__fan Burns a year of the contract, whereas I think if he goes over to Sweden he would still have 3 ELC years starting next season.

  • TheCanucksnaphook

Cameron19 TML__fan I could give a shit about that year of ELC.  If he can play, he can play.

TML__fan I agree Don . Plus it would Be nice for him to play the smaller ice surface

I know it seems like a backwards step but if not the marlies Id like to see him in the O…could really see how he compares to others his age…playing with men is great and all over in sweeden but Id like to see his skillset against guys his own age…rather hear about how hes on pace for 100 points rather then 12 (ya but against men) in the SEL

KurtWhite No to the OHL.   Sweden or Leafs.
