Toronto had a horrible opening period, out-chanced 12-2 at even strength, but after a late power-play goal they managed to get out of it down by a single goal.

The second was much more even, but the Rangers managed to extend their lead after former Leaf Dominic Moore scored New York’s fourth. The Leafs then had a great third, scoring twice in the first seven minutes, setting up a great last part of the game. The two teams both had great shifts, and exchanged a number of chances, but it was the Rangers who got the winning goal, off the stick of Mats Zuccarello. Toronto had two chances in the last six minutes, but didn’t do anything with them, and couldn’t generate anything with the extra man in the dying seconds.

After that first period, the chances were fairly close, including the excellent third period, when both sides managed six chances each while the game was tied.

In a game like this, where the Leafs were so heavily out-chanced, there weren’t a lot of good results from anyone. The only Leafs to finish in the positive at ES Close were Trevor Smith and David Booth, who both had solid games, with Smith benefiting from a couple of solid shifts with Kessel. Those were just about the only positive shifts Kessel had, as he finished a -5 at ES Close. He was joined by his regular line-mates Bozak and Van Riemsdyk, who also finished -5, as did Daniel Winnik, despite putting up a couple of third period points. JvR and Bozak were on for three goals against, with Kessel on for four individually.

Nazem Kadri and Mike Santorelli both had fairly solid games, getting close to even at ES overall, and Kadri leading the forwards in ES ice time. Leo Komarov and Joffrey Lupul didn’t generate a lot offensively, but had some of the toughest zone starts on the team, which makes their numbers more palatable.

Stephane Robidas and Korbinian Holzer had the best numbers on the defence, with Robidas finishing even and Holzer ending up at -1. They did have the easiest zone starts on the team, which helped them be on for the most offensive chances of the defenders. The hardest zone starts went to Morgan Rielly, who ended up with pretty poor chance numbers at ES Close. He was better while the Leafs were trailing, and his two goals were critical. None of the other defensemen had good numbers either, with Franson and Polak at -5 and Gardiner at -6.

Almost everyone’s numbers go down , with Cody Franson falling below the 50% ES Close mark, though he’s still the top defenceman. After 55 games, there’s almost no difference between Phaneuf, Polak, Rielly and Gardiner at ES Close, although the younger pair have generally had easier ice time.
