It looked like it might be a heartbreaking night for the Maple Leafs, as they had a strong overall game against Detroit, but trailed after a fluky goal managed to beat James Reimer.
Fortunately, a late goal with Reimer on the bench ensured at least a point, though the team will be disappointed with a poor defensive play that lead to a overtime winner for the Wings.
The Leafs responded well to falling behind, dominating the play, particularly in the third period, when they were able to open a possession advantage on the Wings. That also showed in the zone entry numbers, as a great third period saw them finish well ahead in-terms of controlled entries, though they lost the neutral zone battle overall.

The Leafs were unlucky to be behind after an even first period, and were clearly the better team in the second period. Detroit did create some good chances in the third, threatening to open up a two-goal advantage, and allowed only a couple of chances in the last ten minutes, until Phaneuf was able to find the tying score. The Wings dominated overtime, getting all of the chances in the 3-on-3 period.

Brad Boyes, with Michael Grabner and Byron Froese, had their best offensive night of the season, as in about seven ES minutes they heavily out-chanced the Wings. The top line was again strong, with Nazem Kadri and James Van Riemsdyk in particular putting up big numbers. They also had the best controlled entry numbers, and were responsible for most of the Leafs‘ overall lead in that area.
The one line that were out-chanced for Toronto was Tyler Bozak with P.A. Parenteau and Shawn Matthias, and their possession numbers against the Glendening line are a big contrast from the top line’s, as Kadri and co. were able to dominate that matchup. The Zetterberg line, with Dylan Larkin, were pretty well matched by Joffrey Lupul’s trio, which managed to exchange chances with them, and had a strong night in the neutral zone as well.
Morgan Rielly and Matt Hunwick were a pretty effective pairing on the night, limiting Detroit’s controlled entries very well, but being on for a series of chances in overtime drops Hunwick to the bottom of this list, and makes him the only Leaf defenceman out-chanced at ES.
Scott Harrington did well, drawing back into the lineup, and Dion Phaneuf and Jake Gardiner teamed with the top line to generate a lot of controlled entries.
