One of the more entertaining games the Maple Leafs have played this season saw them exchanging chances with Pittsburgh, forcing some excellent play out of both goaltenders.

The two teams exchanged goals early in both of the first two periods, but that was it, as the third and overtime were scoreless, with the Leafs taking the extra point in the shoot-out as Bernier bounced back strongly from the Islanders game.

The two teams were close in possession numbers for much of the game, although the Penguins did open up a late advantage in the final few minutes of regulation and overtime. The chances were also level, both teams finishing with 26, the highest total for the Leafs as a team and the highest combined total in a Toronto game this season. There was also little between the two teams in the neutral zone battle, although Toronto was able to win the advantage in controlled entries.

For how many chances there ended up being, this game had a very slow start, with only one in the first ten minutes. After that, though, the game was on, with a wild second period seeing each side put up ten chances. Pittsburgh were the better side in the closing portions of the game, with nine of the last thirteen chances, including the last three in regulation on the power-play.

Nazem Kadri, Leo Komarov and Michael Grabner went up mostly against the Malkin line, and had a very good night as they produced more chances than any other Leaf line. Kadri was on the ice for ten Toronto ES chances, and his +4 was one of the team’s best. The line also did well in the neutral zone, dominating controlled entries.

Mark Arcobello also returned to the team, replacing Byron Froese, and he had a good game in his NHL return, the best of the forwards at +5, on for only a single ES chance against on a line with Joffrey Lupul and Daniel Winnik.

James van Riemsdyk and Tyler Bozak had a solid game, finishing even in chances, while Peter Holland’s line were mostly used in the defensive zone, and struggled to do much offensively. They were also badly beaten out in zone entries, as the Penguins entered at will against them.

Dion Phaneuf joined the Kadri line in having an excellent game, as he was on for a lot of offense. He and Gardiner had the best chance differentials on the team, and Phaneuf’s +7 is one of the best for any Leaf this season. Things were not nearly as good for Matt Hunwick, who had a poor night — he was on the ice for twelve Penguin chances, and had an especially tough time on the few shifts he spent without Morgan Rielly.
