The scoreline points to a pretty dull game, but there were a decent number of chances both ways in this game.

The two goaltenders played well to keep it scoreless. After neither side managed to score in regulation, James Reimer was finally beaten by Jordan Staal in overtime, giving Carolina the win.

This game was really down to Reimer, as Carolina dominated the chances, especially in the third period, where they pulled away to establish a big overall lead. The Corsi numbers were much closer, as Carolina overhauled a substantial lead built up by the Leafs in the second period. Carolina dominated the neutral zone as well, which fit with their superior chance numbers. Hockeystats.ca gives much more favourable chance numbers for the Leafs, but my review found that a number of shot locations were not that accurate, and I’ll stand by my numbers.

Toronto had a terrible start, giving up the first six chances of the game. While they were able to find a groove midway through the second period, things went south again in the third period. Toronto’s finish to regulation was even worse than their start, as Carolina had the last nine chances of the game, including shutting out Toronto in the third period.

The top two lines were both able to generate some offense, with the most chances coming from Tyler Bozak and P.A. Parenteau, who had a couple of chances in overtime to add to their regulation efforts with Shawn Matthias. That line finished in the negative, but only by a single chance. The only forwards on the Leafs to finish even were Nazem Kadri and Leo Komarov, who were effective against Eric Staal. Michael Grabner had a poor shift late, on with Daniel Winnik and Peter Holland, that dropped him away from his linemates. Winnik and Holland were the worst of the forwards, as that third line was outmatched, including some poor possession numbers against Jay McClement’s line.

It’s rare that Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly are at the top of the defencemen rankings, but it goes to show what an effective night they had against the top Carolina line, mostly able to shut them down. Carolina was able to make hay against the other two defense pairings, though. Marincin and Polak, who avoided the top lines as usual, were the clearly outchanced and struggled to drive any controlled entries, while Jake Gardiner was the only Leaf defenceman not on for a single Toronto ES chance.
