Corey Perry Re-signs, Leafs’ Season Now a Total Waste

News broke last evening that Corey Perry had signed an 8 year deal totalling 69 million dollars to stay with the Anaheim Ducks and his newly signed centerman (also of 8 years), Ryan Getzlaf.

Pierre wrote a pretty good piece here on it. A précis of this is basically: Getzlaf signed, the team is doing well, I like it here in California. Not too earth shattering.

This is noteworthy to Leaf fans, because, well, he was supposed to sign in Toronto so he could “move closer to home”. Well, if ifs and buts were candies and nuts, oh what a wonderful Christmas we’d all have. The last home town discount I can think of was *probably* Jeff O’Neil and Eric Lindros, 8 years ago and those only appeared to be victory laps for both players as they didn’t do a heckova lot afterwards. Since the new CBA was ratified in 2005 and since “tweaked” in 2012, the free agent market has been more and more barren. Players rarely, if ever, make it to free agency, and if they did under the old CBA, they were given front loaded, back diving contracts that will surely drag those franchises into disrepair when they get close to expiring, and, in the case of Brad Richards, 1 year after he signed it (hint: don’t sign players that can’t skate to the longest and most lucrative contract in the NHL). The funny thing about this — well, maybe not so funny — is the teams that were complaining about money are the ones that are throwing it around wildly.

Word to the wise: those players you are drooling over will never make it to free agency. And that high-priced, high scoring top 6 player? They want 1st round picks + your prospects for them if they are rebuilding. That’s not going to change.

Bryan Murray had some interesting things to say:

“I don’t know how you ever get a scorer in the NHL anymore, but if you can get a top-six forward it’s always the objective,” said Murray. “I haven’t identified anybody who is going to be moved.”

“There’s only a couple of teams that are going to say today that they’re probably going to trade a couple of kids. (Teams) want to keep the best part of their core and then try to add to it as well. It certainly makes it difficult to make trades.”

Expect not very much to happen at all this year at the trade deadline. The shortened season is keeping teams artificially in the hunt past the trade deadline and everyone is buyers right now. Players are extremely expensive, for now, and there’s not a heckovalot out there now.

Also of note: Chris Stewart was player of the week last week. So, there’s that.

Frustratingly, the Leafs can do basically nothing with their excess of money, except light cigars and laugh at their fans as they roll around in it, it appears.

Unless the Leafs are in the mood of trading away their top prospects and/or picks, you shouldn’t expect any moves of significance out of Toronto. The teams that look like they have a fork stuck in there, appear to be: Washington, Buffalo and Florida in the East and Columbus, Calgary and Colorado in the West. Please note that Duchene is playing 2nd line and Stastny is playing the 3rd line in Colorado. Something has to give there.

There may be some improvement and there may be some charges made in either conference — heck, Toronto could be in the same boat as the other bottom feeders before the deadline, though that looks unlikely.

While on the topic of that, if this is what a “losing streak” looks like, I’ll take it. We were blown out badly in one game and went down to the wire in all the others.

BOS: Loss 4-2 (empty net), PITTS: Loss 5-4 (SO), WINN: Loss 5-2, PITTS: Loss 3-1 (empty net), WINN: 5-4 Loss (SO)

They were tight in each game, save for their worst game of the season against Winnipeg.

In case you missed the other “hot stove” from Saturday Night, here it is:

Ah… Leafs can still hire the best coaching staff, best scouts and best management with their money… No restriction on that.  Last time, I checked, those are what selects and grooms talent .. that talent (ie. players) then become what wins a Cup…

Money can still be a major advantage.. Just need to deploy it properly

We have 30 scouts (next team in line has 18 and it drops to something like 14-15 after that), 6 coaches. Best skating coach in the world. More front office staff than we can count and they still can’t spend all the money they have.

The only way now to MLSE to use their money is buy-out contract for other teams. Like DiPietro and Lecavalier.

Use be honest our money signed Getzlaf and Perry.

Thommie Berglund seems to be the guy that can uncover talent in Europe in the late rounds so that we need to continue with that.

Now that Perry is off the table Nonis can start focusing how to spend the cap for next season, but if everybody is buying then it is a good idea to be selling.

So Bozak, Liles, Komi, MacA all need to go for as much as possible.

They don’t need to spend all of their money. They need to win it all and be as profitable as possible. Steps have been made as you note to get us there.

Next season Leafs have used 45 million.  Liles and Komisarek are gone for sure, so adjusted for cap spent is only 37 million.

Resigning Kadri, Gunnar, Franson and Komorov will only cost around 10 million. So when all said and done Leafs will have around 16 million in cap space next season.

The right strategy, I believe, is just to sit tight and wait until some GM have to unload top end talent.

Yep I agree, do not waste your cap space with Connollys. Try to identify useful cast offs like MacA and sign them for cheap. Develop your picks and stay pat until something sweet comes.

Very interesting – I saw the Wild – Avs game and Stastny was playing mainly with Mitchell.  If stastny can turn Mitchell into a goal scorer – what can he make Kessel ?

Right now I believe the way forward is to take on stupid contract and get pay for it.

    Stastny 6.6 million
    Bouwmeester 6.6 million.

how should we otherwise spend the money.

Would I prefer Duchene? You better believe it. I don’t think you could pry him out of Colorado, but he can’t be enamoured with his treatment there—only offered a 1 year 3 million dollar contract, was able to at least get 2 years (this is for a franchise player) and then the coach rides him on the 4th line. Different story this year, but it doesn’t look like he’s getting the top line minutes like he deserves.

As far as Stastny, ya he’s a big upgrade over Bozak and would be fantastic with Kessel and Lupul, but he still feels like a stop gap. If he can play at a point a game like he has 3 other times in his career, then we’ve nothing to complain about.

Seems like A LOT of money tied up down the middle and they have, clearly, an inexperienced GM on the hot seat there (as well as a coach) and he may make some moves under duress an experienced GM might not make.

    Time will tell.

Duchene would cost a lot, while Stastny might come cheap. Of course Duchene would be piece to acquire but only he can force that deal.

But Stastny is only one more season so why not take a chance.

Duchene is a cornerstone, and for my eyes, he’s one of the few centers in the league that can play and skate with Kessel. Making those plays at top-speed is a critical element to his game.

That’s the one that has been missing from Kessel’s game, is that he has to slow down a lot to wait for his teammates to catch up. Always stopping up at the half-boards and waiting for players to catch up to the play.

If he had a player that could have that game-breaking speed like he does, at center, it would be a pretty devastating line with he and Lupul. Right back as one-of-the, if not the, best line in the league, like it was last year.
The chances of that are slim-to-none, but that’s my preference. Stastny could be a nice pickup if we don’t have to expend any assets. Bozak for Stastny, straight up, which is tilted in our favour, but it should be—6.6 million is a ridiculous sum for a player like that. Not many teams can afford that, but Toronto are one of them.

    Stastny utilized/relegated to 3rd line 6.6 million
    Grabo utilized/relegated to 3rd line 5.5 million

Not suggesting a trade just seems a strange way to spend money to me.

Grabs usage or lack thereof is a little puzzling. Why not at least try swapping his and Bozak’s roles for a few games and see what we come up with.

One move I truly hope to see is a bonafide hardrock big minute top 4 D. Top 2 would be better but we need to solidify the top 4 for sure.

Agree – I would pay a lot from Duchene including Gardiner, but not even Avs would be that stupid unless Duchene wants out.

Stastny for Bozak would be a fair deal. Then you send Komi to Calgary for Bouwmeester straight up.

Move out MacA and Liles for pick and prospect.

Maybe we can get him as well.

Avs is not what they used to be. As I mentioned I watched the Wild game and they look like the Leafs in the 2nd period against Jets for most of the game.

Could be that Duchene – even though that he loves the team – have had enough.
