Nick Kypreos is reporting that the Toronto Maple Leafs have agreed to terms with C Mikhail Grabovski on a 3 year deal, worth $8.7M or just under $3M per season. Grabovski is coming off an impressive debut campaign for the Maple Leafs in which he recorded 20 goals and 48 points in 78 games played. This contract will lock him up until 2012, when he can start looking for the big bucks at the prime age of 28. A nice signing by Toronto, and the term of the contract should inspire Grabovski to work his tail off for that next big payday. With Mikhail in the fold, the Leafs payroll now stands at approximately $50M, leaving about $7M left in cap space.

@Jordan
Would you do Kaberle and Finger for Campbell, Versteeg and a 2nd (which would be our original 2nd rounder which was given to Montreal for Grabs….and then shipped to Chicago for Lang)? In other words, a 30-40th pick?

Question: is there a cut off date for Brad May? What I mean is that if he re signs with toronto, we owe the Ducks a 6th rounder. Does this condition expire after a certain date?

@The cause 2000
Oh for sure. Not much of a salary increase but gaining Versteeg. Our defence if basically Adding Campbell and Frogren at 8.5 mill, other then Kaberle and Finger7.75 mil….thats done in a second for me, but I dunno if Chicago does it

@ Garrett, Thanks!
@ Jordan, I couldn’t agree more, for the right price I wouldn’t mind seeing Big Bert in our line-up, based on his year last year it is obvious that he still has some juice left in the tank…its nice to see Burke & Co change the whole dynamic of this team from inside and out, BUT what do we do with all the dead weight we currently have that obviously need a change of scenery ie Stajan/Stempniak/Poni etc – I have nothing against these guys just think they need to be moved for their own careers as much as the leafs need them moved for the rebuild…

@neil, you’ve left out potential bonus payouts, e.g. Bozak’s cap amount could be as high as 3.7 mil. According to capgeek.com, the cap is at 52.6 with 4.1 to spare.

With Pittsburgh losing both Gill and Scuderi, does anyone think Kaberle for Staal is still viable, with perhaps a few throw ins going both ways.
July 3rd, 2009 at 10:54 am
Yup – didn’t include “could be’s”
Kaberle and Finger to Chi for Campbell and Versteeg….saves Chi 1 mill. Adds 1 mill to us, replace Kaberle and add a young shooter … hmmm still debating. Campbell is expensive….hmmm

@Jordan:
Yeah, I think it expired July 1st when he became UFA.

The thought of Bertuzzi on our team gives me the CREEPS please don’t talk like that…we have kids who need to play ,we dont want a patch up im trying to forget JFJ you keep bringing back the bad nightmare……..
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:04 am
Save Chicago more then 1 mil. Versteeg is prolly gonna want 3-4 mil. They already have their big 3 in Hossa, Toews and Kane….unlikley to happen but its a possible thing they might have looked at. Our defence would be even sicker with Campbell (although a steep price)
Schenn-Komisarek
Campbell-White
Frogren-Exelby
Stralman, MVR
-All equals still only about 18 mil so its not over paid.
Just dreaming though

Yeah sounds like a pipe dream alright.
Kaberle for Staal, eh?
July 3rd, 2009 at 11:33 am
Everyone keeps putting Komi and Schenn together on top lines in their pairings. I don’t think this will be the case. Both are the same type of D Man (though Schenn has time to improve his offensive game) and both require a quicker, more agile defender to play with. I see these two being split up most of the season and playing together consistently on the first PK.

@Neil:
There are no official rumours of Pitt-Tor yet.

On a side note: Sportsnet is reporting that Samuelsson will sign with one of the Canadian clubs. By my estimation, that gives the Leafs a 16.66666666666666% chance…

I’m guessing Vancouver. They have holes up front, a bit of cap space, and haven’t done much thus far other than re-signing the Sedins.

Campbell is over paid and he blows goats!
July 3rd, 2009 at 12:30 pm
Samuelsson signs with Canucks. Per TSN.
July 3rd, 2009 at 2:04 pm
Any idea what Samuelsson’s avereage cap hit is? He’s gonna look great on a line with the Sedin Twins!!
As for Bertuzzi, could you imagine if Burke brought back Moore and then a bit later brought in Big Bert??

rick nash signed an extension with the blue jackets….there goes the dream…trade finger!
