Should both play well, the Leafs – to very little risk of their own – connect on three of three sensible gambles, and could end up acquiring five or six ‘additional’ draft picks.

That said, it’s hard to not notice how the Devils deteriorated down the stretch. Lou – and longtime director of scouting David Conte, who you guessed it, has been linked to the Maple Leafs organization – either struggled to identify NHL-capable talent coming into the draft, or struggled to develop those players in the meaningful years thereafter.

With William Nylander playing again this year plus new top prospects Marner and Kapanen, there’s no shortage of legitimate high-end youngsters on the rookie Leafs team worth getting excited about. This is a pretty strong roster reflective of the team’s recent efforts to replenish the prospect pipeline.

Hamburg, N.Y., police chief Gregory Wickett on Friday did not elaborate on the investigation, alluding to an “incident that allegedly occurred” at the player’s off-season home in suburban Buffalo. Police are still gathering information and awaiting forensic tests, he said.
