Mitch Marner slides a nice feed to Dylan Strome (one of two assists on Strome goals last night) in the final World Junior summer showcase game, a 6-2 Canada win:

Not hard to picture this duo doing some damage together come the real deal in December and January.

Mitch Marner finished the Showcase with three assists in two games.

Two beauty individual efforts from Leafs prospects Timashov and Bracco in yesterday’s Sweden-USA matchup.

  • Travis Yost: Maple Leafs using savvy investment strategy (TSN)
The Leafs already connected on Winnik Contract I. Up next are Matthias Contract I and Parenteau Contract I. I feel rather confident that at least one of those two players will exceed contractual expectations and net something for this rebuilding team at the deadline. Should both play well, the Leafs – to very little risk of their own – connect on three of three sensible gambles, and could end up acquiring five or six ‘additional’ draft picks.

  • Travis Yost: Does Devils’ draft record reflect on Lamoriello? (TSN)
That said, it’s hard to not notice how the Devils deteriorated down the stretch. Lou – and longtime director of scouting David Conte, who you guessed it, has been linked to the Maple Leafs organization – either struggled to identify NHL-capable talent coming into the draft, or struggled to develop those players in the meaningful years thereafter.

    (MLHS)
With William Nylander playing again this year plus new top prospects Marner and Kapanen, there’s no shortage of legitimate high-end youngsters on the rookie Leafs team worth getting excited about. This is a pretty strong roster reflective of the team’s recent efforts to replenish the prospect pipeline.

  • Sean Lahey: Auston Matthews, projected 2016 No. 1 pick, to play in Switzerland (Puck Daddy)
After months of delays, the ZSC Lions made it official on Friday: Auston Matthews, the projected first-overall pick in next June’s NHL Draft, has signed a one-year deal to play for the Swiss side.

  • Ryan Lambert: Trying to sort out Vancouver’s nonsense summer (Puck Daddy)
Does anyone have a clear indication of what Benning is going for here in his attempted… what do you want to call it? Rebuild? Rebuild on the fly? Remaking? Retooling? It could be all or none of those things, depending on your viewpoint. And also, it’s important to stress “attempted.”

  • AP: Patrick Kane under investigation, police confirm (CBC)
Hamburg, N.Y., police chief Gregory Wickett on Friday did not elaborate on the investigation, alluding to an “incident that allegedly occurred” at the player’s off-season home in suburban Buffalo. Police are still gathering information and awaiting forensic tests, he said.
