After two fairly defensive periods to open the game, things were pretty wild in the final period, with both teams racking up chances.

Nashville went ahead on the power-play, but the lead was short-lived, and for the second straight game the Leafs survived to a shoot-out. This time, they earned the win, concluding an excellent road trip.

Nashville were dominant in terms of possession, and while that doesn’t really show in the chance numbers until the final period, they did dominate the neutral zone throughout. That included far more controlled entries than the Leafs managed, with a gap of almost 20% in that stat.

The two sides traded chances early, but the third was a real problem for the Leafs, who were holding on in the last ten minutes. Nashville closed regulation with six of the last seven chances, and dominated the chances in the overtime (albeit with an extra man for part of it) as well.

The top line were the only line to win the possession battle, as they had the better of their matchup with James Neal’s line. That was also true in chances, and in the neutral zone, where they were the only line who managed to come close to breaking even.

Tyler Bozak’s line were solid as well, finishing even in chances, while P.A. Parenteau was not on with his line-mates for a couple of chances against, and ended up topping the table, level with JVR at a +4.

The other two lines were used more defensively, and it showed in their results. Nick Spaling and Joffrey Lupul were heavily out-chanced, particularly in the third period, as they played a fair amount in those closing minutes. Peter Holland ended up the shoot-out hero, but his line produced almost nothing offensively, and somehow did not manage a controlled entry in the game.

It was a very impressive night for Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly, who again got a lot of minutes, and really thrived, pairing mostly with the Leafs‘ top line. Hunwick, on for over 20 ES minutes, was not on for a single Predators chance at ES, an amazing result.

Jake Gardiner had a much tougher time, finishing as a team worst -6. Scott Harrington played less than any other Leaf, with Roman Polak getting more time with the likes of Gardiner and Rielly at times.
