Despite carrying most of the play, New York managed to put three goals behind Jonathan Bernier in the opening period.

P.A. Parenteau cut the lead back in the second period, but three goals in the second half of the frame opened up a comfortable lead for the Isles.

The Leafs finished a long away ahead in Corsi, but the chances were much more even, as the Leafs were unable to threaten much as they chased the game in the third period. Both teams exchanged chances through the first two periods, before a much more defensive third. The neutral zone was won by Toronto, mostly down to their domination in the third period.

Toronto made a good push in the second period, and opened the period with seven of the first nine chances, including Parenteau’s goal. They weren’t able to build on that, though, as the Islanders had the last five chances of the period, three of which ended up behind Bernier.

It was another strong offensive game for the Tyler Bozak line, and while they weren’t as defensively strong as they were in the first game, they managed to finish comfortably in the positive along with strong neutral zone numbers. Nazem Kadri’s line was again used against John Tavares, but the result was very different. They had the most defensive zone start ratio of any line, but were badly exploited, generating only a single chance at even strength in the game.

The best line for Toronto was Brad Boyes with Shawn Matthias and Byron Froese, which did really well in the first period and finished comfortably in the positive. They did a great job of controlling the neutral zone, limiting the Isles’ controlled entries. This was particularly impressive given that they got a lot of time against the Grabovski line.

Morgan Rielly and Matt Hunwick, like the Kadri line, were given the most difficult match-up and had a tough night, with Hunwick heavily out-chanced. Jake Gardiner and Dion Phaneuf matched up against most of the non-Tavares lines and had a solid night, both men finishing at +2 in chances. Martin Marincin and Roman Polak were not given a single defensive zone start, but were only able to finish even, although Polak had solid neutral zone numbers.
