Two goals in less than 30 seconds opened up a Washington lead late in the opening period, but a first NHL goal for Nikita Soshnikov and Colin Greening’s third period goal got the Leafs level.
That lasted less than 90 seconds, with a Caps goal on the powerplay putting them back ahead — a lead they were able to see it out.

Again, Toronto were able to build a solid advantage in Corsi while they were behind and pushing for the win. That wasn’t reflected in chances, as the Capitals ended up finishing ahead at even strength. Toronto did have a good game in terms of zone entries, which was helped with a good push in the closing minutes.
The third period was very disappointing for the Leafs, as they generated only one chance while chasing the late lead and that one came with the net empty. Washington had several chances to extend the lead, while Toronto manufactured little down the stretch.

The top line didn’t have a great night, despite the first goal for Soshnikov, as he, Leo Komarov and Nazem Kadri were clearly out-chanced by Alex Ovechkin’s line. The Marlie trio of William Nylander, Zach Hyman and Kasperi Kapanen, with Michael Grabner also getting some time in place of the Finn, struggled to contain opponent zone entries, but did a good job in terms of chances, with Nylander leading the table.
It was a bad night for Morgan Rielly, who also struggled against the Ovechkin trio. Matt Hunwick’s numbers were somewhat better, as Rielly had a couple of poor shifts without his regular partner. The other pairings all finished around even, with a solid night from Connor Carrick seeing him lead the table.
