Toronto did well to take the lead against Minnesota in the second half of a back-to-back, but the Wild scored two powerplay goals to extend the Leafs losing streak to three.

The two sides were close in Corsi, but Minnesota were able to finish ahead in chances, both overall and at even strength. The neutral zone was also won by the Leafs, partly thanks to a late push for an equalizer.

The Wild had a strong second period, dominating the chances and being somewhat unlucky to fall behind during that stretch, although they did get level. It’s been a bit of a problem recently, but again Toronto did not generate much while chasing the game at even strength, as their only chances in the last nine minutes came with an extra attacker.

Nazem Kadri, playing with Leo Komarov and Brandon Leipsic, went up against Mikko Koivu’s line. While they were able to have good possession numbers, they were narrowly out-chanced, all three men finishing at -2.

William Nylander’s Marlie line were given a match-up against Thomas Vanek’s trio, and were the best line at producing offense to go along with a great controlled entries ratio. They were also the worst defensive line, though; all were on for at least seven chances against.

The best Leaf line was the fourth line, as Ben Smith, Brooks Laich and Colin Greening, who mostly went against Minnesota’s fourth line, were the only trio to finish above even in chances.

Morgan Rielly was a workhorse in this game, playing over 27 minutes including over 24 ES minutes — more than Ryan Suter. Rielly and Matt Hunwick matched up mostly against the Koivu line, and both struggled in chances, with Hunwick on for a team-worst ten against at ES. Frank Corrado and Jake Gardiner were the best of the pairings, with both men finishing well in the positive.
