The Maple Leafs responded well to a heavy loss in Winnipeg, as they battled through a tight game against Minnesota with James Reimer returning to the net.
However, they couldn’t find a way past Devin Dubnyk, and a second period power-play goal ended up holding up to give the Wild the win.

The possession battle was close, but a strong third period saw the Leafs take the win in chances, as they chased the game hard. The two teams were level in the neutral zone, indicative of a pretty even game overall.
After being behind in chances after two periods, the Leafs made a strong push to tie the game in the third, including a goal that was ultimately ruled out on a coach’s challenge. The Leafs had eight of the last ten chances of the game, but it wasn’t enough to get them a goal.

Tyler Bozak led the Leafs on the night, as he and his line were excellent, on for only a single chance against. The top line also had a much stronger performance, as despite some defensive struggles they all managed to finish in the positive, and led the team in chances for.
Nick Spaling, Daniel Winnik and Michael Grabner got a tough assignment, going against Parise and Granlund and not getting a single offensive zone start, but they managed to finish above even as well, mostly down to one strong shift in the third period. Peter Holland’s line wasn’t able to get any offensive chances, despite having the best zone entry numbers.
The bottom pairing of Martin Marincin and Roman Polak was fairly sheltered, particularly Marincin, who didn’t face a single defensive zone start in the game. They were effective in that time, not on for a chance against and putting up very strong controlled entry numbers. Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly had one of their stronger games of late, although they both ended up in the negative in chance differential. Dion Phaneuf had a good response to his tough night in Winnipeg, finish above even and leading the team in ES ice-time.
