Game 14 Scoring Chances and Zone Entries: Capitals 3 vs. Leafs 2 (SO)

The Maple Leafs had another strong game, and looked set to earn a big road win, only to give up a goal in the final second, sending them to overtime for the second straight night.

This time, neither side managed to score, and the Capitals took a win in the shoot-out, leaving the Leafs with two points from the week-end.

After an even first period, the Capitals began to carry the play in terms of possession in the second, but Toronto was able to keep things close in terms of chances. That included being ahead while the score was close. Washington’s possession advantage was reflected in their neutral zone numbers, where they had a very substantial advantage.

For once it was the Leafs that grabbed an early lead, and they managed to pretty much match the Capitals chance for chance the rest of the way. Washington were able to generate some momentum in the last six minutes of regulation, while Toronto missed a couple of chances for an insurance marker, culminating in Backstrom’s equalizer.

Leo Komarov had a very strong night from a chance perspective, as he finished with the best number on the team, a +5, though he, along with the rest of the top-line, struggled to control the neutral zone. Nazem Kadri also finished with strong offensive numbers, leading the team in that respect.

Michael Grabner had a good game as well, playing mostly with Lupul and Spaling, and finishing above even in chances, while having one of the best sets of numbers in the neutral zone. The one line that was out-chanced was Bozak with Parenteau and Lupul, and even that was only a marginal deficit.

Roman Polak and Scott Harrington had the best chance numbers on the defence, benefiting from playing mostly against the Brooks Laich line, and almost totally avoiding the Ovechkin unit. That matchup went mostly against Matt Hunwick and Morgan Rielly, and that pairing posted some terrible numbers in controlled entries, though their chance results were more reasonable.
